The arrival of British composer Patrick Doyle in the film music community during the late '80s was a gift that has benefited many movies and also produced many wonderful soundtracks, from his work on Kenneth Branagh's films (HENRY V) to this eloquent remake of Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic children's tale, masterfully brought to the screen by director Alfonso Cuaron. Using a relatively subtle, restrained tone instead of the heavy dose of Hollywood schmaltz generally found in films of this nature, Doyle's score incorporates everything from a children's chorus to ethnic Indian instruments (including a sitar) to give A LITTLE PRINCESS an unique and gentle sound in the process. The music has a grace and warmth almost totally absent from much of today's generic Hollywood underscoring and a touching finale (a full vocal rendition of "Kindle My Heart," the film's main theme) that packs more of an emotional punch through its simplicity and lyricism than any other "children's" soundtrack of the 1990s.
