Editorial Reviews

Aaron Copland recorded a vast amount of his own music for Columbia and CBS Masterworks from the 1950s to the '70s, and now Sony Classical -- the heir to those labels' archives -- celebrates the centennial of the composer's birth with these reissues. This two-disc set features William Warfield in the orchestral version of the Old American Songs and Adele Addison in the 12 Poems of Emily Dickinson, along with the first CD release of Copland's recording of his In the Beginning. In another CD premiere, the second disc contains an abridged recording of Copland's opera The Tender Land, with the composer leading the New York Philharmonic, the Choral Art Society, and soloists including Joy Clements, Richard Cassilly, and Norman Treigle. Two other sets, released simultaneously, focus on Copland's Famous Orchestral and Chamber Works and Chamber Music and Rarities. Barnes & Noble
