Editorial Reviews

Along with Buzz Ballads and Living in the '90s, 90s Rock is the sort of nostalgic compilation that's advertised in late-night TV commercials, promoting a handful of one-hit wonders alongside tracks by more established artists. Anyone who listened to modern rock radio or Top 40 countdowns during the decade will recognize every song here, although those looking for the harder side of '90s rock won't find much along the lines of Korn, Nirvana, or Metallica. Instead, this disc celebrates those artists who prized melody over guitar muscle, meaning that Gin Blossoms, Semisonic, Barenaked Ladies, and Toad the Wet Sprocket lead the pack, while Soul Asylum and Collective Soul are the only groups whose sound ever really dipped into grungy waters. It would be fruitless to criticize 90s Rock for omitting such decade-defining songs as "Smells Like Teen Spirit," since it's impossible to capture the sound of a diverse decade in 18 tracks. Rather, this disc should simply be enjoyed for what is: a smartly constructed mix tape for fans of poppy, hook-laden rock. Andrew Leahey, All Music Guide
