About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

When Christian metallists Stryper packed it up in 1991, it appeared as though their audience had quickly vanished, as most rock fans shifted their attention to such other burgeoning styles as grunge and thrash. But during the group's absence over the ensuing decade, a large cult following developed, resulting in the chaps deciding to give it another shot by the early 21st century. In 2003 came their first extensive U.S. tour in ages, resulting in the arrival of their first-ever live set, 7 Weeks: Live in America 2003. Although Stryper's look may have changed (gone is all the hairspray, makeup, and hilarious yellow-and-black leather outfits), their anthems still retain their bombastic flair, especially evident in Michael Sweet's Dennis DeYoung-esque vocals. Most of the expected Stryper favorites are included here, including the rockers "Soldiers Under Command" and "Free," the power ballad "Honestly," and a track that falls somewhere in between, "Calling On You." A pretty darn solid set, although one fumble is spotted toward the end -- a metalized version of "Winter Wonderland" (somewhere, David St. Hubbins and Nigel Tufnel are green with envy). September 26, 2004: As a big fan and former fan club member, I was thrilled that Stryper made a live album. Michael proved he still has a dynamic voice. The addition of "Winter Wonderland" gives the CD a touch of holiday warmth(metal style). I sincerely hope that this is NOT the last we have heard of Stryper. They still have a large, and loyal, fan base.

May 20, 2004: I saw Stryper twice during the late 1980's during the THWTD & IGWT tours and I always thought they were a great live band. I've always regretted that they never released a live album to showcase their live energy from that era. But "7 Weeks..." works nearly as well. It's great to hear so many old favorites again--especially "Reach Out" (A very pleasant surprise. This song was never included in the shows I saw during the 80's, and this is probably my overall favorite track on the CD), "More Than a Man," "Makes Me Wanna Sing" & "The Way." The only disappointment is that of all 5 studio albums, "In God We Trust" is the only one not represented here--not one song! Surely they could have squeezed in "Always There for You." It may be about 14 or 15 years later than I had originally hoped for, but a live release from Stryper is still VERY welcome today. Now it just needs a live DVD companion...
