About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Favoring whimsy over confrontational bluster and an eccentric musical range instead of the same six James Brown samples, De La Soul created 3 Feet High and Rising, one of the most important recordings in hip-hop. While the first decade of rap established it as a music of the 'hood, the 1989 debut from this Long Island trio -- Trugoy, Mase (not to be confused with Ma$e), and Posdunos -- proved that hip-hop was a state of mind that could exist anywhere. Establishing themselves as nonthreatening, new-style hippies, De La created an alternative to ghetto tough and buppie suave stereotypes while scoring hits with "Buddy," "Potholes in My Lawn," and "Me Myself and I." Though they moved away from their sunny posture on subsequent releases, their innovations, both cultural and musical, opened the door for an entire school of hip-hop and helped usher a new range of blackness into pop culture.
