A perfect place to begin and quite likely conclude for those interested in Motown's late-'70s funk band Switch. As you no doubt assume, 20th Century Masters collects all of the biggest hits from the group's three-year, four-album stint on the Gordy imprint. You get the laid-back sexy ballads "I Call Your Name," "I Wanna Be Closer," "Love Over and Over Again," and also the steamy funk grooves "There'll Never Be," "Best Beat in Town," "You Pulled a Switch." When you take a retrospective look at Switch's better moments like this it becomes evident that the group was at their best when they were able to integrate their grooves with their ballads, as they did on "There'll Never Be." That's pretty much what's here: a total of 11 songs with a funky bottom end to groove to and a sentimental top end to dim the lights to. And even if Switch did have some stellar album tracks, you probably don't need those. For most, 20th Century Masters should suffice as a fine one-stop collection. Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide

August 11, 2002: What's missing in today's R & B? Give a listen to Switch and you'll find out. Tight Production, Soulful Arranging, Heavenly Harmonizing, Swoonful Singing and just enough Funk to make you shake your booty. From the opening horns of There'll Never Be to the last glass shattering note from the great Bobby Debarge, this is a great cd. The only song missing is Calling All Girls, another masterful slow number. In fact it should have replaced I Do Love You, not one of their better efforts. Today's R & B does not have the soulful melody, funky edge and excellent singing that leads, Phillip Ingram and Bobby Debarge produced. Excellent singing without the phony gymnastics in lieu of a voice that some of today's singers employ. Even though the group did not last very long, they are a memorable one. Some Gems: There Never Be, My Friend in the Sky, I Wanna Be Closer(terrific Ernie Watts sax),Dont Take My Love Away, I Call Your Name, Call on Me, You and I. Want to hear what Switch was all about and cant get the original lps? Pick this up. You'll be pleased!
