    Editorial Reviews

Jimmie Lunceford's wartime orchestra is featured on selections from eight different radio broadcasts on this CD, including five appearances from the Jubilee series. The band's sound was basically unchanged from the late '30s, except that altoist Willie Smith had departed. Tenor saxophonist Joe Thomas (who also sings), clarinetist Omer Simeon, and trombonist/singer Trummy Young have their spots, while Lunceford (who rarely actually played with his band) is showcased on flute during "Holiday for Strings." Fine music that will be enjoyed by Lunceford's fans; highlights include "Hallelujah," "Pistol Packin' Mama," a fairly lengthy "Yesterdays," "For Dancers Only," and "'Tain't What You Do (It's the Way That You Do It)."
