Editorial Reviews

Fred Rich, who was 27 when he led his first record date in 1925, headed a large number of sessions during the next six years, and during 1929-1938 was the music director for CBS radio. While Rich's recordings tended to be dance band in nature, he did use a lot of top white jazz musicians along the way and there were occasional hot solos. This CD, with the exception of the final five numbers which are taken from movie short soundtracks and transcriptions, dates from 1926-1931. Heard from along the way are trombonist Miff Mole, the Dorsey Brothers, Jack Teagarden, Bunny Berigan (who takes two vocals) and bass saxophonist Adrian Rollini. Among the high points are "The Blue Room," "It All Depends on You," "Accordion Joe" and a pair of Hit of the Week releases ("Little Girl" and "It's the Girl"). This program contains many of Fred Rich's most rewarding recordings, a set of hot dance music that should greatly interest fans of the era. Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
