Uruguayan singer-songwriter Jorge Drexler presents his first international release since he won an Oscar for his contribution to the film The Motorcycle Diaries, and it's prizeworthy indeed. Working with members of the Bajofondo Tango Club, including producer Juan Campodónico, Javier Casalla, Gabriel Casacuberta, and Luciano Supervielle, Drexler shrouds his literate Spanish songs in dusky textures that at one moment suggest soft acoustic balladry and the next invoke the claustrophobic environs of Portishead. Drexler's plaintive voice, reminiscent of Caetano Veloso's, wafts through these songs, which, in typical South American fashion, pitch love in terms of science, mathematics, and history -- see "La Infidelidad en la Era Informática" (Infidelity in the Information Age). Fans tuning in from abroad will take note of two covers, one by the Brazilian rock band Titãs, the other "High and Dry" by Radiohead. In a more perfect world, the densely lyrical work of Jorge Drexler would be every bit as popular as that of these two superstars. Mark Schwartz, Barnes & Noble
