The seven discs of RCA's 100 Fiedler Favorites contain an impressive assortment of tuneful classical hits in a wide range of styles, all played with characteristic verve by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra at their prime. This ample box set features the most popular concert fare of the middle of the twentieth century, which was dominated by Romantic works, so it's unsurprising to see heavy representation of music by Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt, Edvard Grieg, Johann Strauss II, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, and other famous nineteenth century composers on the first five discs; however, the sixth disc is devoted to popular works by twentieth century American composers such as George Gershwin, George M. Cohan, Richard Rodgers, and Leroy Anderson; the seventh disc samples songbooks from Hoagy Carmichael's to Stevie Wonder's, so the wide range of the Boston Pops' programming is fully demonstrated here. Recorded between 1955 and 1974, these selections are all taken from analog originals and vary somewhat in fidelity, but digital mastering and careful engineering make all the difference in their fine sound quality; for the most part, the earliest stereo recordings are as splendid in tone, detail, depth, and resonance as any of the later performances. This historic collection is highly recommended to newcomers to classical music for its broad repertoire, engaging playing, and affordability. Blair Sanderson, All Music Guide

Blair Sanderson
